The Buena Vista volleyball team extends its current win streak to five by posting a 4-0 mark over the weekend capped off by a thrilling five-set victory to begin the day over the host Pioneers followed by a three-set sweep of Augustana College (Ill.).
A day after posting 46 kills, including a career-high 26 during a win over Crown, freshman Sydney McLaren registed 22 kills to begin the day in what was a hard-fought five-set victory over Grinnell. The Beavers took the first two sets before the Pioneers clawed their way back with a 25-15 win in the third before taking a 31-29 win in the fourth. BVU trailed 10-9 in the decisive fifth set before rolling off three straight points and grabbing a 12-10 advantage. It was back-and-forth from there, but the Beavers finished things off with a kill by Megan Vaughn.
"It was kind of an icky match for us," said head coach Aubrey Havlichek. "We started very well and executed within the first two sets but let them get into it with too many errors oer the next two. We finished strong and was able to pull it off."
McLaren and Roe also posted double-doubles with 17 and 24 digs, respectively, while Mackenzie Gropel posted one of her own with 42 assists and 14 digs. Serena Sandvig was a force at the net with six total blocks while also chipping in with eight kills of her own.
Summer Goss gave the team its fifth double-double of the match with 11 assists and 24 digs.
Sandvig posted a team-leading nine kills in the finale against Augustana College (Ill.) with Roe adding eight kills and 11 digs. Gropel finished with 31 assists and eight digs.
"It was a great game against Augustana," Havlichek said. "Our defense was on point and kept alot of plays alive. We had contributions from every member on our small roster and executed our game plan from the service line very well."
Buena Vista improves to 6-3 on the year and will now get set to host Bethany Lutheran for its home opener on Tuesday, September 11 at 7:00pm.
