Senior Brooke Runneberg turned in a career-high 12 kills while freshman Megan Vaughn added a career-best 11, to help lead the Buena Vista volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep at Martin Luther on Tuesday night.
Runneberg had a stellar night at the net, registering just two errors and finishing with an attack percentage of .400. Fellow senior Serena Sandvig was also solid, posting eight kills and just one error for a .438 percentage. Junior Emily Ivey got the start and chipped in with a career-high five kills.
The Beavers turned in 16 kills in each of the first two sets and hit over .300 as a team in both frames. They dipped off a bit in the third with 14 kills and a match-high seven errors.
"We are happy to be walking away with a win tonight," said BVU head coach Aubrey Havlichek. "We struggled to maintain our style of play and found ourselves being beat on the easy points, but a win is a win! We have plenty of takeaways to improve upon for the weekend and our home opener in a week."
Mackenzie Gropel had a stellar all-around night with five kills and no errors while posting another double-double with 34 assists and 11 digs. Senior Summer Goss turned in a team-high 14 digs while senior Kylie Roe chipped in with nine digs and three service aces.
Ruth Bucholz registered eight kills to lead Martin Luther (0-5) which was swept for the fourth time in its first five matches.
Buena Vista improves to 2-3 on the year and will prepare itself to play four games this Friday and Saturday during the Grinnell College Tournament. The Beavers open play on Friday night at 4:00pm against Crown College before taking on Illinois College at 8:00pm.
