The Buena Vista volleyball team wrapped up its regular season on Saturday with a pair of non-conference victories out east in New York, while running its overall win streak to 10 and giving head coach Lori Slight her 100th victory at BVU.
It began against Brooklyn to start the day where the team rolled to a 3-0 sweep with wins of 25-7, 25-4, and 25-20. The Beavers held Brooklyn (15-12) without a single kill in the second set and only eight total for the match. Senior Ali Grein led a balanced offensive attack with eight kills while senior Jade Schaap followed with seven and Jamie Navinskey six. Kylie Roe turned in five ace serves and was one of four players with eight digs. Mackenzie Gropel dished out 24 assists while Summer Goss turned in 10 digs. As a team, the Beavers finished with an attack percentage of .304 and also had 10 block assists.
That momentum carried over into the final match against St. Joseph's of Long Island, as BVU cruised to wins of 25-10, 25-14, 25-14. BVU held them to just a .033 hitting percentage and less than 10 kills in each set.
Schaap turned in a match-high 13 kills and just two errors on 22 swings, to go along with five digs. Serena Sandvig had nine kills while Navinksey turned in seven kills and nine digs. Gropel dished out another 35 assists and moved past 500 on the year. BVU hit .416 in the match and had only seven digs.
Goss had 16 digs to help lead the way, defensively, while Brooke Runneberg had three block assists.
Buena Vista improves to 20-9 overall and has reached 20 wins for the just the third time in school history and for the second time in the last four years. Next up for the team will be the Iowa Conference Tournament which gets underway on Tuesday, October 31. BVU will host a first round game against an opponent yet to be determined.
