CEDAR RAPIDS - A day after coming in fifth in the 10,000-meter run, Buena Vista junior Emily Hoesing responded with yet another strong performance in the 5,000-meter run by coming in sixth overall and posting a career-best time of 18:08.17. Sophomore Brittini Thomas also ran well in the finals of the 100 and 400 meter hurdles to help lead the Beavers on the final day of the American Rivers Conference Championships.
"Emily is truly the real deal," says head coach Colt Slack. "Doubling up in the 10k and 5k is no easy feat and one that she accomplished at a very high level. Sh knew what the team needed to secure our finish and she broke yet another school record in that 5k race. We as coaches couldn't be more proud of her this weekend."
Thomas set a new personal best mark (15.11) in Friday's 100 hurlde preliminary and would end up fourth in the event after a 15.29 second finish in Saturday's finals. She later took home eighth in the 400 hurdles.
"Brittini stepped up huge in both events this weekend," Slack added. "She wasn't even projected to score points this weekend but we knew she had it in her. Her lifetime best in the 100 on day one gave her the confidence she needed to bring some points to the team."
The 4x100 and 4x400 relays each took seventh a day after the team' 4x800 squad came within a second of the school record after finishing in sixth.
"Overall, we couldn't be happier for what the team did this weekend," says Slack. "We asked alot of them and they delivered."
The Beavers will send select individals to participate in the Last Chance qualifying meet hosted by Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill., on Thursday, May 16.
