Taking on the defending Co-IIAC regular season champions to begin Iowa Conference play on Saturday night inside of J. Leslie Rollins Stadium, the Buena Vista women's soccer team did not back down from the challenge but came up just short in a 2-0 loss to the visiting Luther College Norse.
BVU has never beaten Luther since it began soccer 20 years ago, and the team was trying to change that on Homecoming weekend. The Beavers hung right with the Norse for most of the contest and had multiple scoring opportunities but couldn't get the right footing on the shot.
Luther (5-5, 2-0 IIAC) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 33' when Julie Trandahl intercepted a pass and blasted in a shot from around 30 yards out over a leaping Rachel Novotny. That's how things stood until Luther came away with the ball on a scramble just outside the box before Maggie Anderson came up with the ball and shot it through.
Caroline Maher had two shots to lead BVU which was edged, 15-6, overall. Four of BVU's six shots came on-goal.
Novotny had herself a strong game in-goal with five saves while being charged with two hard-luck goals.
Buena Vista (2-8-1, 0-1 IIAC) is back in action on Wednesday evening at Loras College for a 5:00pm kickoff inside of the Rock Bowl.
