Sophomore Caroline Maher scored the team's first goal of the season during Tuesday evening's season-opener at Bethany Lutheran College, but it was the Vikings scoring a late goal in regulation to go on for the 2-1 victory.
Both teams went scoreless over the first 45 minutes, despite combining for 16 total shots, including 10 on-goal.
Bethany Lutheran broke the scoreless match nearly three minutes into the second half on a shot from the top of the box. Maher then evened things back up midway through the period when she also took a pass from the top of the box from sophomore Samantha Arnold.
The Vikings then converted off a corner kick with just less than 1:30 left to play in regulation and hung on for the thrilling win.
Arnold had a team-leading five shots (three on-goal) to help pace BVU offensively, with Maher adding a pair of shots on-goal.
Nicole Moldstad registed a match-hign nine shots for Bethany Lutheran, which edged the Beavers, 15-13, overall.
Rachel Novotny was strong in-goal, going the distance and also tallying seven saves.
Buena Vista now returns home this weekend when it looks to even its record during the annual BVU Classic. The team opens against Martin Luther Collge on Friday afternoon at 4:00pm inside of J. Leslie Rollins Stadium.
