STORM LAKE - The Buena Vista wrestling team returns home tonight (Jan. 10) for the first time since hosting the BVU Open at the start of December and will wrestle its final home dual of the year as it host Nebraska Wesleyan for an American Rivers Conference match-up beginning at 7:00 p.m. inside the Grand Ballroom of the Harold Walters Siebens Forum on the BVU campus.
This has become an annual event for the Beavers (3-4, 0-2 A-R-C), who are 2-1 all-time inside of the Ballroom. They are hosting a Prairie Wolves team that is 1-5 overall after picking up their first win of the season during the Priaire Wolves Duals back on December 15.
For BVU, senior Brad Kerkhoff is one of five seniors competing at home for the final time in their career. He has over 70 careeer wins which is most by any current Beaver. He'll take the mat tonight with a team-best 6-1 record in dual matches this season and is 12-6 overall. Fellow senior Dyaln Huntoon, who currently has a team-leading 13 wins on the year, is 5-1 in dual matches and reached 20 career wins (20-10) this past weekend at the Central College Under Armor Invite. A third senior, Shane Vaughan is closing in on 40 career victories and is currently tied for seventh in program history with 29 career falls.
The Prairie Wolves have just five underclassmen on this year's roster, but one of those, 125-pounder Eron Haynes is a team-best 19-4 to this point. Just as he's anchored down the lower part of the line-up, junior heavyweight, Justin Hennessey, has done the same at the top. He comes in with 61 career victories and is currently 12-6 this season. That duo marks the only two wrestlers currently with over 10 wins on the year.
BVU picked up a 36-9 victory over NWU in the first-ever dual between the two sides which was also the first-ever dual inside the Ballroom. NWU bounced back in 2017-18 and handed the Beavers a 39-15 loss inside of Snyder Arena.
