Juniors Brad Kerkhoff and Shane Vaughan came out and posted back-to-back wins for Buena Vista on Wednesday night, but the Beavers came up short as it opened Iowa Conference action against #15 Coe College inside of Siebens Fieldhouse with a 38-7 loss.
The night began at 133 pounds and the Kohawks would jump out to a 15-0 lead before the Beavers cut the lead in half. Kerkhoff led his match 5-1 after the first before and was still in front, 5-2, heading to the third before he broke things open with three takedowns in the period en route to a 13-5 major decision at 157 pounds. He improves to 5-4 on the year and picks up his 43rd career victory.
Vaughan notched his eighth win of the year at 165 with an 8-2 decision. After being taken down in the first, he got an escape followed by a takedown and a two-point nearfall to taker a 5-2 lead. Another takedown in the second period made it 7-2 before he added a point later in the period on a stalling call.
Sixth-ranked Jake Voss ended the BVU for the Kohawks with a technical fall right at the end of the first period which pushed the margin back to 20-7. Kevin Pape fought hard in his 197-pound match, trailing just 3-0 heading to the third, but a reversal and a pair of quick nearfall attempts quickly pushed the lead to double-digits.
Buena Vista is now 0-2 overall (0-1 IIAC) while Coe improves to 2-0 (2-0 IIAC). The Beavers remain at home on Saturday afternoon when they host St. Olaf in a non-conference outing starting at 4:00 p.m.
