The Buena Vista wrestling team held a 15-9 lead midway through Tuesday night's dual at Northwestern College (IA), but it was the Red Raiders winning three straight matches late that proved to be the difference in a 20-18 contest in Orange City, Iowa.
Juniors Brad Kerkhoff and Shane Vaughan each picked up narrow two-point decisions to give the Beavers the six-point advantage with four matches left. The Red Raiders (1-0), however, fought back with a pair of major decisions over the next three bouts to regain a 20-15 lead. Senior Tyler Puls did get a late takedown to pick up a 3-1 victory to close things out for the Beavers at 285.
Riley Altenburg picked up his team-leading seventh win of the year and the 20th of his career with an 11-8 decision at 141 pounds after freshman Schuyler Spurrier picked up his second career fall in what was his first collegiate dual when he pinned Cole Mills with 38 seconds left in the second period.
Buena Vista is 0-1 on the year and is now off until hosting the annual BVU Open on Saturday, December 2. Action inside of the Lamberti Rec Center is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m.
