Grapplers with Several Solid Finishes at Tough Auggie Open

The Buena Vista wrestling team fared well on Saturday as it took part in the annual Aggie-Addidas Open, hosted by Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minn. Several hundred wrestlers competed at what is one of the premier small college tournaments in the Midwest.

With the format of the tournament, if you lose a first round match, you enter a consolation bracket and can't place in the top-eight overall.  However, you can wrestle all the way back and win the consolation bracket.  There is also a Gold, Silver and Bronze division.

Freshman Schuyler Spurrier put together a sixth-place overall finish in the Silver Division at 133 pounds while John Tuttle was third at 149.  Brad Kerkhoff wrestled to a sixth-place finish in the Gold Division at 157.

Riley Altenburg came back and was the consolation bracket champion in the Gold Division at 141 pounds, as junior Shane Vaughan was runner-up at 165 and Kevin Pape was runner-up at 197.

Kerkhoff was also involved in one of the wildest mathces you will see, coming out on top of a 22-21 decision in his consolation semifinal.

After losing his opening match, Altenburg came back with a fall, 11-4 decision and his second fall of the day to earn his consolation championship.  Pape also dropped his first match of the day and then picked up two pins of his own before a medical forfeit in his consolation final bout.

Buena Vista will open up its dual schedule on Tuesday night, November 21, with a non-conference match-up at Northwestern College (IA), starting at 7:00pm.
