PELLA - The Buena Vista women's basketball team rallied late to tie the game in the final 30 seconds, but it was Central scoring with six seconds left, and the Dutch held off a last chance possession for the Beavers as they hand BVU a 47-45 loss on Wednesday night inside P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium.
With the loss, BVU remains winless in American Rivers Conference play at 0-6 and fall to 5-10 overall. The Dutch have now won two of their last three conference games to improve to 2-3 and sit at 5-8 overall.
Central led by six at 45-39 with 1:35 to play before the Beavers ran off six straight points, including the game-tying layup from Destiny Einerwold with 25 seconds left. The Dutch then regained the lead on a layup from Jenna Clark with six seconds left. BVU came up empty on a chance to tie with under 10 seconds left, and still had a chance to tie at the end after Central misfired on a pair of free-throws, but again came up empty.
Einerwold led the way for BVU with 16 points on 6-of-18 shooting, while grabbing eight rebounds and recording five steals. Holly Schneider was right behind with 15 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Those two also combined to go 7-of-9 at the free-throw line as BVU went 14-of-19 overall.
Morgan Muhlbauer finished with just seven points, but got the job done on the defensive end by grabbing a career-high 14 rebounds and setting a career-best with five blocks.
BVU struggled from the field overall in the game, going just 15-of-62, including 1-of-8 from downtown. It relied on its defense all night and held the Dutch to 30 percent overall and 1-of-12 from beyond the arc.
Central held a 10-5 lead after the first quarter and was in front 20-16 at the break. BVU's 18 points scored in the fourth quarter was the most by either team in a quarter the entire game.
BVU will now turn its focus to the University of Dubuque (2-13, 0-6 A-R-C) which remained winless as well in the league following a 78-64 loss at Coe. Tip-off against the Spartans inside the Stoltz Sports Center is at 2:00 p.m.
