STORM LAKE - The Buena Vista women's basketball team fell just short of its first American Rivers Conference victory of the year on Saturday against Luther, so the Beavers will now turn their focus to achieving that feat on Wednesday night when the team travels to Central College to face a Dutch team that notched its first league win one week ago.
Who: Buena Vista (5-9, 0-5) at Central (5-8, 1-3)
When: Wednesday, January 9, 2019 | 6:00 p.m.
Where: Pella, Iowa | P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium
About Buena Vista - The Beavers nearly picked up their first conference win of the year on Saturday afternoon, but Luther held on in the end for a 69-66 victory. It was the team's best opportunity for a league win thus far after dropping each of their first four A-R-C contest by double-digits. Erin Gerke came off the bench and scored a career-high 21 points and is currently third on the team in scoring at 9.8 per game. Holly Schneider and Morgan Muhlbauer have each played well over the last four games. Schneider is averaging a team-best 12.3 points and grabbing 6.8 rebounds per game during that span with Muhlbauer third at 10.8 points and a team-leading 7.5 boards. The Beavers have also shot the ball better from the field over that same stretch, shooting 43.8 percent to raise it's season mark to 38 percent. The team is averaging 63.6 points per game overall this season, but has averaged nearly 69 per game over the last four games. It continues to struggle from long range, shooting just 26 percent for the year. Cassy Miller has made a team-leading 16 shots from beyond the arc and is shooting right at 39 percent.
About Central - The Dutch are coming off a tough 55-43 home loss to defending champion, Wartburg College, on Saturday. The team led by three at halftime and 37-34 heading to the fourth, but the upset bid fell just short as the Knights closed the game on a 13-4 run to pull away. Prior to that contest, the team notched its first league victory of the year, defeating the University of Dubuque, 72-66 last Wednesday night. It was just the third conference win for the Dutch since the start of last season. Central has not won more than two league contests since 2013-14 when it finished 3-11. Jenna Clark's 12.8 points per game average leads a trio of players averaging double figures for the year. Kendall Brown is right behind at 12.0 points per contest while hauling in a team-leading 8.2 rebounds per game. The Dutch are averaging just under 60.0 per game for the year, but their stingy defense is only allowing opponents to score 62.5 per game which is third in the league.
Up Next: The Dutch will wrap up their three-game homestand with Wednesday night's game against the Beavers and travel to Luther on Saturday afternoon for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off with the Norse. BVU will also remain on the road for a 2:00 p.m. contest at the University of Dubuque.
