Big Third Quarter Lifts Monmouth over Beavers 83-65

Monmouth broke open an eight-point halftime game by outscoring Buena Vista, 23-14, in the third quarter, and the Scots went on to top the Beavers in the opening game of the Thanksgiving Classic, co-hosted by both Monmouth and Knox Colleges, on Saturday afternoon.\

Senior Morgan Muhlbauer posted a season-high 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting while also grabbing 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the year.  She was just three assists shy of a triple-double and also posted four blocks before fouling out.  Freshman Jennifer Schneider came off the bench to score a career-high 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting.  McKenna Whitehill chipped in with nine points while playing a game-high 34 minutes.

Buena Vista shot 41 percent from the field but was held to just 5-of-14 from long range.

The Scots, meanwhile, were on fire from beyond the arc, connecting on 8-of-15, while shooting 54.2 percent from the field overall.  They also outrebounded the Beavers, 39-30, and held a slight edge in points in the paint (40-34).

Monmouth scored the first four points of the game and never trailed in the contest.  The Scots led by as many as nine in the opening quarter, but the Beavers scored the final three of the period to get within 18-12.  Monmouth, however, came out and scored the first eight points of the second quarter to push their lead to 26-12 before Muhlbauer, who scored the team's first seven points of the quarter, made the second of her two free-throw attempts at the 5:53 mark for BVU's first points.

Monmouth led by 16 late in the quarter before the Beavers closed the half strong, including a Cassy Miller three-point bucket with 23 seconds left got BVU within 37-29 at the break.

A 9-2 sput by the Scots to begin the second half put them in control as they went up by 13 in the first four minutes and maintained that advantage throughout, taking a 60-43 lead to the fourth.

Shayne Smith led all scorers with a game-high 25 points for the Scots, which improved to 4-0 on the year.  Carley Tumbull registered a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Buena Vista is now 2-3 overall and will travel to play at Knox in the final game of the trip on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
