Buena Vista head women's coach Dana Christen has announced the hiring of Alison Nagel to serve as her top assistant coach beginning in 2018-19.
Nagel, a native of Fort Dodge, Iowa, has spent the last two seasons serving as a graduate assistant women's basketball coach at Concordia University of Texas while also completing her master's degree in sports administration. During those two years, she was part of a program that went 31-22 overall, making trips into the American Southwest Conference (ASC) each year and advancing into the semifinals in 2017-18.
Prior to moving down south, Nagel spent one season as an assistant coach at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge in 2015-16. The Tritons went 16-8 that season before ending the year during the semifinal round of the conference tournament. Following that season, she spent the summer playing semi-professionally with the Iowa Force where she averaged 13.1ppg and 5.0rpg and led the team in three-point percentage (53 percent). In that first season in the league, the Force advanced into the regional tournament.
Nagel spent two years playing collegiately for the Tritons as well where she helped the team go 57-12 overall, including a school-record 30 wins (30-6) in 2010-11, while placing fourth at the National Junior College National Championships. She went on to be named a Third Team All-Region selection following the year. During her sophomore season, Nagel ranked fourth in the conference, averaging 17.2ppg while leading the league in free-throw percentage at 84.7 percent. She was fourth in rebounding (8.9rpg) and fourth in three-point percentage (37.3 percent). Following the year, she was named First Team All-Region, Third Team All-American was selected to the All-Tournament Team for Region XI.
Following her two years at ICCC, she went on to finish her collegiate career with two years at Southwest Minnesota State University (DII) and was the team's leading scorer and rebounder both seasons. For her career, she totaled 672 points and 307 rebounds for the Mustangs and was named to the league's All-Academic Team as a senior.
She graduate from SMSU with a bachelor of science degree in exercise science.
Nagel resides in Storm Lake and is engaged to Zachary Shearer. The couple is planning a June 2019 wedding.
