The Buena Vista women's basketball team solidified its Iowa Conference Tournament positioning on Saturday by using a big third quarter to help complete the season sweep of Nebraska Wesleyan with a thrilling 71-62 victory on Alumni Day.
Holly Schneider led four starters in double figures with 19 points with Morgan Muhlbauer right behind with 17 points and nine rebounds. Claudia Larsen had a monster game with 12 points, 13 rebounds, five assists, four blocks and three steals. McKenna Whitehill chipped in with 13 points and four assists.
Both teams were a little sluggish offensively in the first half with a combined 28 turnovers and both teams shooting under 35 percent from the field. The Prairie Wolves led 14-13 after the first before BVU took a 28-27 lead into the half.
The Beavers then put up 29 third quarter points and built a 56-46 cushion. They led by as many as 13 early in the fourth quarter and were able to maintain that margin over the final frame.
NWU led by as many as five with just over two minutes left in the first quarter and the game was virtually back-and-forth until BVU gained control in the third.
The Beavers shot 43 percent from the field while holding NWU to only 33 percent. Both sides combined to go just 13-of-51 from long range, and each side struggled from the charity stripe.
BVU dominated the points in the paint (36-16) and owned a 49-42 edge on the glass.
Buena Vista now sits at 11-11 overall (6-7 IIAC) and plays host to the University of Dubuque on Wednesday night (Feb. 7) at 6:00 p.m.
