CEDAR RAPIDS - The Buena Vista softball team nearly came out with a major doubleheader sweep at eighth-ranked Coe College on Saturday afternoon, but was edged in the opener, 1-0, and settled for the split after bouncing back with a 4-3 triumph in the nightcap.
The opener was an epic pitcher's duel with the two teams combining for a total of five hits in the contest. Michaela Mason doubled for the game's only extra-base knock and one of BVU's two hits overall. Marissa Promes was dealing on the mound, going the distance and scattering three singles and striking out five. The only blemish was a one-out RBI ground out in the fifth after she issued a lead-off walk and followed with a wild pitch.
Sophomore Carlee Guyett had herself a big day at the plate in game two by driving in all four of the team's runs. She got the scoring started with a two-run single up the middle in the second inning and then doubled the score when she laced a two-out double to left center field in the fourth inning.
The Kohawks got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with an unearned run following a pair of errors in the inning by the BVU defense. They then made it a one-run game in the fifth by recording a pair of two-out RBI singles. Peyton Gross then came on to relieve Promes and got a ground out to end any further damage.
Gross then went on to pitch the final two innings, allowing only a two-out single in the seventh en route to her second career save and giving the Beavers their first American Rivers Conference victory of the year.
The loss was just the second conference loss of the season for Coe which dropped them to 28-5 overall (8-2 A-R-C). Buena Vista is now 15-15 overall (1-9 A-R-C) and will look to build off the first league win when the team hosts Loras College (10-21-1, 1-9 A-R-C) on Tuesday, April 16, starting at 3:00 p.m.
