CEDAR RAPIDS - Senior Chase Bonner led a series of high finishes for the Buena Vista University throwers on Friday by claiming runner-up honors one the first full day of events at the 2019 American Rivers Conference Outdoor Championships.
Bonner, who came into the championhips seeded second, turned in a heave of 51-09.75 to finish nearly a foot in front of third place. He later capped off his career with a seventh-place showing in the hammer throw with a toss of 166-04.
The Beavers racked up the points in throws as fellow senior Drew Beall was seventh in the shot put with his best mark of the year at 47-10.50. He then claimed fifth in the hammer throw at 166-08. Shelmund Mercalina was fourth with his toss of 167-0.
As a group, the throwers combined to score all 21 of the team points on the day.
Saturday wraps up the three-day event with field event action scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. The finals of the running events will get underway starting at 1:30 p.m.
