Field Events Lift Beavers at Mustang Open

CEDAR RAPIDS - It was another solid day in field events for the Buena Vista men's track & field team as it had several high finishes to help lift the Beavers to a fifth place overall team finish on Saturday at the Mustang Open, hosted by Mount Mercy University.

Casey Lamle took seventh in a tight 400-meter race, crossing in 52.58 which was only a half-second out of the top-5.  Cameron Kaltschnee ran the 10,000-meter run for the first time in his career and posted a time of 33.59.8.

The Beavers ran a solid 4x400 meter relay and came in third with a clocking of 3:34.25.

Garrett Bates turned in a third-place finish in the pole vault at 3.75 meters.  Cory Kitt was 12th in the long jump and then took fifth in the triple jump.  Chase Bonner continues his senior campaign with another top-3 finish as he finished as runner-up at 15.40 meters.  Fellow senior Drew Beall was fourth in the event at 14.27 meters and also placed fourth in the discus with a heave of 44.8 meters.

BVU took three of the top-4 spots in the hammer throw, led by Bonner's second runner-up finish at 50.38 meters.  Shelmund Mecalina was third (50.10m) while Beall took fourth at 49.98 meters.

"The field events carried the load for us today with the high finishes," said he coach Colt Slack.  "All in all, a good weekend for us to get better and compete with some different competition with a small mix of conference schools."

The Beavers chalked up 66 total points on the day and placed fifth as a team out of 14 total teams.  They continue the outdoor schedule on April 17-18 by taking part in the Northwestern College Red Raider Open in Orange City, Iowa.  Wednesday afternoon's action gets underway at 3:30 p.m. and Thursday's schedule begins at 11:00 a.m.
