There were a handful of top-five performances in the field events for the men's indoor track and field team on Saturday, as the Beavers competed at the annual Darren Young Classic, hosted by Grinnell College.
Senior Chase Bonner took home gold in the shot put with a heave of 15.46 meters (50-8.75) as Drew Beall took third at 14.79 meters (48-6.25). Beall turned around and captured second in the weight throw with his best toss of the year at 16.60 meters (54-5.50) with Shelmund Mercalina in third with his best heave of the year at 16.18 meters (53-1.0).
Cory Kitt landed fourth in the triple jump with his leap of the day at 12.91 meters. He also took 10th in the long jump.
"Our throwers had a really solid day," said head coach Colt Slack. "They carried a big load for the team. It was great to see Drew have a day in the weight throw and Bonner is always fun to watch in the shot put. With only a few weeks left until conference, we need to focus on health and recovery."
The American Rivers Conference Championships are February 22-23 in Waverly, Iowa. The Beavers will first serve as host of the NJCAA Regional Meet on February 15-16.
