The Buena Vista men's outdoor track and field team scored points in multiple field events on Friday while senior Brennan Dostal earned a spot into both the 100 and 200 meter dash finals, as the team wrapped up the first day of the 2018 Iowa Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on the campus of Central College.
Dostal ran the fourth-fastest qualifying time of 10.95 seconds in the 100 and was fifth-fastest to qualify in the 200 at 22.03. His season-best mark in the 100 is 10.71 which came into the championships ranked second in the IIAC.
Alex Loerts ran a big personal best time of 2:02.09 in the 800 which placed him 20th. It was seven seconds faster than his previous best entering the day.
Drew Beall came up with his best toss in the shot put at 50-6.75 and placed sixth overall. That toss was just five inches off the school record. Chase Bonner finished in ninth with a toss of 48-8.75. Bonner then led the team in the hammer throw with a personal best heave of 172-11 that placed him sixth and just shy of Garrett Rohlk's school record of 173-4 set just two weeks ago. Beall was right behind in seventh at 168-02 while Rohlk settled for ninth at 157-10.
Buena Vista finished with eight points on the day and is in eighth place overall, just ahead of Coe which has six points. Central is the overall leader with 64 points with Dubuque in second with 55.
Saturday's final day gets underway with the remaining field events starting at 10:00am with the first final running event slated to begin at 1:30pm.
