The Buena Vista men's tennis team played its first home match of the spring on Wednesday afternoon against visiting Martin Luther College, and the Beavers came up short with a 5-4 loss to the Knights.
BVU's No. 1 team of John Foss and Aaron Pluym and its No. 2 tandem of Jake Thompson and Aaron Mumm were gave BVU a 2-1 lead going into singles play with 8-4 and 8-6 triumphs, respectively. Foss and Pluym improve to 6-1 on the year with their victory while Thompson and Mumm are 4-3.
"Another outstanding night of doubles," said head coach Brett Groen. "We got an opportunity to really get the team started with wins at one and two. Had a nice lead at number three doubles before falling late in the match."
Foss improves to 5-1 in singles matches this season after allowing just two points during his No. 1 singles straight set victory at 6-1, 6-1. Thompson won for the sixth time in seven matches with his 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 3.
"We definitely have some more work to do on singles, as we need to get a few more match wins and team wins and it has to come from the production of our singles," added Groen. "Another great night for John and Jake getting our only two wins. John continues to shine at number one as he is very adaptive to the things that has been a bonus for him as he makes the right adjustments to make the wins happen."
BVU led the match 4-3 but the Knights (1-4) were able to come back at pick up wins in the final two matches to take the one-point victory.
Buena Vista dips to 4-5 on the year and is back on the court this Saturday for a pair of Iowa Conference matches in Pella. The Beavers begin with a 9:00am match against the host Dutch before facing Coe College at 2:00pm.
