The Buena Vista men's tennis team played a pair of matches to begin its spring break trip on Saturday night, and after falling in a tough match, 5-4, against Bethany Lutheran, it came right back to knock off Mount Marty, 6-3, for its first win of the spring season.
BVU came out strong in the win over the Vikings, sweeping all three doubles matches, and picking up a pair of forfeits, along with a thrilling three-set tiebreaker by freshman Jake Thompson.
John Foss and Aaron Pluym picked up a doubles victory against the Vikings as Foss went on to win in straight sets at number one singles. Thompson, after dropping his first set in singles play, rallied all the way back to win the last two by scores of 6-4, 10-8.
"I cannot say enough how proud I am of our team," said head coach Brett Groen. "It was a very long and very productive day. We got our first win of the season in a hard-fought battle with Mount Marty in which we had an amazing day of doubles. In singles play we were struggling a bit but stayed focused and got a couple of key wins there to help us win the meet. Against Bethany Lutheran, again an amazing job of doubles especially out of the top two."
Buena Vista is now 1-4 on the year and will play North Central (Minn.) and South Central College (Minn.) on Monday at Lifetime Fitness.
