Kevin Edgar scored his first goal of the year late in the second half, but a valiant effort came up just short on Sunday afternoon as the Buena Vista men's soccer team was edged at home by Grinnell College, 2-1.
The Pioneers got on the scoreboard first with 15 minutes left in the opening half off a corner kick. They had eight total first half shot attempts while holding the Beavers to only one.
Grinnell managed to push the margin to 2-0 midway through the second half with a nice cross field pass that led to a goal from about 15 yards out along the right side.
BVU, however, was not about to back down. The Beavers kept the pressure on the Pioneer defense the entire half before finally converting a shot attempt from right in front of the goal. Kevin Edgar took a shot off a loss ball scramble just in front of the net with just under three minutes to play. The Beavers held an 8-7 edge in shot attempts over the final 45 minutes, but missed a few just wide and a couple others were saved.
Manuel Garcia Aguilar suffered the hard-luck loss, going the distance and posting four saves.
"The guys played really hard, and coming off a game yesterday we had heavy legs today," said head coach Ben McArthur. "Hats off to Grinnell for finishing their chances. Kevin Edgar and Ryan Exline the senior centerbacks played a great game. We will regroup and continue the climb forward as we try to get a couple wins this weekend in Illinois against two very tough opponents."
Buena Vista is now 0-5 on the year and will have a few days off before heading to Augustana College (Ill.) on Friday, September 14, for a non-conference match starting at 7:00pm.
