Martin Luther jumped out to a 2-0 first half lead, but Buena Vista made things interesting with a goal midway through the second half to cut the lead in half, but the Beavers came up just short in their comeback bid, as they drop another narrow match, 2-1, at Martin Luther on Saturday afternoon.
The Knights broke a scoreless match when they were able to knock through a lead pass that was batted around down by the goal before being kicked in for the 1-0 lead. Late in the half, Martin Luther made it a two-goal advantage after a shot snuck past goalkeeper Manuel Garcia Aguilar.
BVU got on the board early in the second half when a shot kicked by Noah Bardwell was deflected in off a defender. The Beavers gott off 11 total shots in the second half alone after being held to six in the first, but got unlucky with a few that bounced off the goal.
David Arona and Jared Dow each kept pressure on the Knights defense with a combined seven shots on-goal. Armando Torres was credited with an assist on the goal with Bardwell being credited with his second goal of the year.
Aguilar went the distance in-goal, but suffered another narrow loss, despite registering eight saves and holding an opponent to two goals or less in three of the four matches this season.
"We made some mental mistakes in the first half that cost us, and hard working teams like them punish you for being sloppy in the back," said head coach Ben McArthur. "The second half we were composed, confident and got the goal to make the game fun. We hit the cross bar twice in the second half that would have tied the game. We are still learning how to compete for 90 minutes. Luckily, we can move on quickly and try to improve tomorrow vs Grinnell."
Buena Vista dips to 0-4 on the year and will host the Pioneers at 3:00pm inside of J. Leslie Rollins Stadium. It will also be Senior Day for the team with this year's group being recognized just before the start of the match.
