Buena Vista struck first on a penalty kick and nearly won it late in regulation, but the Beavers and visiting Cornell College ended things in a 1-1 (2OT) tie on Thursday night inside of J. Leslie Rollins Stadium.
Freshman Noah Bardwell moved into a tie for the team lead with four goals when he blasted a penalty kick opportunity past a diving Cornell keeper, giving BVU a 1-0 lead early in the 33'. Neither team had many good looks at the net during the first 45 minutes, and that 1-0 score stood until the 68' when the Rams came out of a scramble from a loose ball with a shot that got by a diving Miguel Aguilar.
The Rams (3-5-1) had 10 shots in the second half as BVU was held to five, but the Beavers nearly took the lead in the final minutes. The Cornell keeper came out to try and snag a ball that was lifted high in the air near the top of the box, but when he came down empty handed, BVU had a pair of players attempting to play the ball on an empty net. The Beavers, however, could not find the handle of the ball, and when they did, the shot attempt was blocked out right by the right post.
The match eventually went into overtime and then to double overtime and the shot attempts were held to a minimum as both defenses stayed strong.
With the tie, it marks the second straight season the two teams played to a 1-1 2OT draw, and it also extends the BVU unbeaten streak against the Rams to seven straight.
Buena Vista is now 3-6-1, and will look to carry momentum over into Saturday's Iowa Conference opener at home against Luther College beginning at 5:30pm. The match will follow the BVU and Luther football game which kicks-off at 1:00pm.
