Freshman Ryan Ruzek turned in a career-best 73 while fellow freshman Anthony Gallagher was right behind at 74, and the two helped the Buena Vista men's golf team card a 306 and sit third overall after 18 holes of the Wartburg College Fall Invite which began on Friday in Waverly.
Ruzek was one of three golfers to post a one-over 73 and is tied for fifth, just two shots back of the lead. Gallagher is tied for eighth while Andrew Underbrink also went a career-best 77 and is tied for 19th. Logan Madren carded an 82 and freshman Evan Krause an 85 to round out the line-up. It's the team's lowest round since posting a 297 in the second round of the Buena Vista Spring Invite on April 17, 2015.
A total of 49 golfers and eight teams are taking part in the event which wraps up on Saturday.
Kirkwood is the clubhouse leader after a 291 with Coe College in second with a 298. The Beavers finished in front of three other Iowa Conference schools, including the University of Dubuque which is one shot back.
The final 18 holes will begin at 9:00am.
