The Buena Vista men's basketball team saw its season come to an end on Tuesday night in the opening round of the Iowa Conference Tournament, as Wartburg College hung on in the end for a 74-68 triumph inside of Siebens Fieldhouse.
Senior Kennedy Drey turned in a monster night for BVU, scoring a game-high 27 points and grabbing 16 rebounds for his fifth straight double-double. He finishes his career with 1,283 points and 842 rebounds. He also added four assists, two steals and two blocks
It was a rough shooting night for the Beavers as they were held to only 41 percent shooting from the field and went 14-of-26 at the free-throw line.
BVU started fast, going up 13-4 with five minutes gone by, but the Knights responded with a 16-5 run to take their first lead of the night at 20-18 midway through the opening half. The Beavers got the lead back at 21-20 but it was short-lived as Wartburg closed the half strong and led 36-32 at the break.
BVU again started fast in the second half, scoring seven straight points, capped by a three-point bucket from Drey to take a 39-36 lead. Wartburg answered with six straight points and never relinquished the lead from there.
The Knights (17-9) built their largest lead at 57-43 with 11:51 still to play, and BVU tried to make one last push. A pair of free-throws from Wisecup made it a 70-66 contest with under a minute to play, but the Knights made their free-throws down the stretch to secure the lead and earn a trip into Thursday night's semifinals at second-seed Loras.
Buena Vista closes its season out at 14-12 overall. The game was also the final one in the careers of Drey, Gallagher, Morgan and Owen Statlander.
