CEDAR RAPIDS - Nick Henrichs took a 1-2 pitch and launched a scorching line drive home run over the fence in left in the bottom of the fourth inning, and that proved to be enough for Egan Bonde who tossed another gem before Gage Smart closed the door and the Beavers open the American Rivers Conference Tournament with a 1-0 victory over third-seed Luther.
Henrichs moves into the team lead in home runs on the year and it came leading off the inning. BVU looked to extend its advantage in the seventh but left the bases load. The Beavers left nine runners on base in the contest while Luther stranded six.
Bonde extended his scoreless streak to 17.2 innings and has not allowed a run since the third inning of a 4-1 loss to the Norse two weeks ago in which he earned a no-decision. In this contest he scattered just four hits and struck out five to improve to 6-1 on the year.
Bryce Rheault singled in his first two at-bats and finished 2-for-3 with a walk. BVU tallied eight hits in the contest with only the one extra-base knock.
Smart took over for Bonde with two outs and the bases empty in the eighth and got a slow-rolling grounder to first base to end the frame. The Norse got the tying run to third in the ninth before Smart got the final out on another ground ball to first.
Luther (23-19) advanced to face BVU after picking up an 11-1 victory to begin the tournament against sixth-seed Loras.
Buena Vista improves to 23-17 overall and will now wait and play the winner of top-seed Coe and fourth-seed Dubuque on Friday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
