CEDAR RAPIDS - The 18th-ranked Coe College baseball team scored a pair of unearned runs in the eighth inning, and that helped the Kohawks hold off the Beavers 4-0 in the opening game of the three-game weekend series at Daniels Park.
Coe grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second and later doubled that score with a run in the fifth.
Buena Vista nearly tied the game in the fourth, putting runners at second and third with just one out. The Kohawks were then able to throw out Peyton Renning at home plate on a wild pitch that resulted in a walk to Porter Sartor that would have potentially loaded the bases.
Nick Henrichs doubled to start the eighth inning but was stranded at third base before Coe went on to add a pair of unearned runs with a two-out single in the bottom half.
Henrichs pitched 5.2 innings for the Beavers, scattering nine hits and striking out three. Gage Smart came on and worked a perfect 1.1 innings and struck out three.
Renning tallied two of BVU's six hits in the contest giving him four hits over his last two contests.
The Kohawks, who improved to 12-1 in conference play, had three players with two hits in the game as they finished with 11 overall.
Buena Vista dips to 12-13 overall (5-5 A-R-C). The same two teams will be back out on the field Saturday afternoon for the final two games of the series. First pitch of game one is set for 1:00 p.m.
