No. 6 Buena Vista Faces No. 3 Coe in IIAC Baseball Tournament Opener

The Buena Vista baseball team will be making its 10th straight appearance into the Iowa Conference Baseball Tournament which is set to begin on Thursday, May 10, in Cedar Rapids at Veterans Memorial Stadium.  Sixth-seed BVU will begin play by facing sixth-seed Coe College at 11:00 a.m.

This year's tournament schedule has changed slightly from year's past.  The winner of BVU/Coe will advance to play second-seed Wartburg directly following at 2:00pm.  The loser will move on to play in the first elimination game that evening at 8:00 p.m.

The Beavers won the opener of the three-game series with the Kohawks on April 20 by a score of 10-5, but Coe bounced back to sweep the doubleheader on April 21 by scores of 16-3 and 8-1.

The Kohawks have won six of the seven meetings all-time against Buena Vista in the tournament with BVU's lone win coming in 2016 when the Beavers won a 9-8 walk-off thriller with a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth.  Devin Wagenman singled home the game-winner with one out.

This marks the 13th appearance for BVU in the IIAC Tournament in 18 years under head coach Steve Eddie.  The team is 18-19 over that span, including a pair of tournament championships (2010 and 2014).  It will be just the second time that the team enters the tournament as the sixth seed.  The first was in 2003 when it dropped the opener to top-seed Cornell College, defeat fifth-seed Dubuque, and then was eliminated by Simpson in 11 innings.

Buena Vista enters the tournament after splitting a pair of games against Wartburg College over the weekend.  BVU took the series opener, 11-5, on Friday night before falling in game one of Saturday's doubleheader, 15-10.  The second game of Saturday's doubleheader was called after just two innings due to rain and lightning.

The University of Dubuque is this year's top-seed after claiming its first-ever regular season baseball title in program history.  The Spartans were able to claim the championship with a sweep at home of Nebraska Wesleyan after the Beavers' win over the Knights on Friday.
