After scoring 10 runs in Friday afternoon's series opening victory against Coe College, the Buena Vista bats were held in check while the Kohawks exploded for 24 runs on the day en route to a doubleheader sweep of the Beavers in Cedar Rapids.
Coe used a big first inning and ninth inning during the opener to break the game open. It jumped out to a 5-0 advantage after the first inning and tacked on eight more in the ninth. BVU cut the deficit to 5-2 with an RBI single from Nick Henrichs and a run-scoring double by Parker Truesdell.
That was as close as the Beavers could get as the Kohawks added single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to push the margin to 8-3 before the big final inning.
Truesdell, along with Peyton Renning, finished with two hits as BVU tallied eight overall.
Egan Bonde (1-2) suffered the loss after being charged with seven runs on nine hits over 4.1 innings.
BVU was held to only four hits in the finale, including two from Renning. He finished off a big series, individually, and moves up to fourth in the Iowa Conference with a .404 average.
Coe got on the board first with a sacrifice fly in the first and later made it a 3-0 lead with a two-run single in the fourth. BVU got its lone run of the contest in the fifth when Renning scored on a wild pitch.
The Kohawks made it a 5-1 lead in the sixth before a three-run homerun in the ninth broke the game open.
Eric LaRue got the start and pitched 5.1 innings, scattering five hits and allowing five runs. He also walked four and struck out four. Henrichs worked the final 3.2 and surrendered the final three runs on just two hits, while striking out four and walking two.
Buena Vista dips to 12-15 overall (8-6 IIAC). The team is currently in sixth in the league standings, but just three games back of the league-leading Kohawks who improve to 11-3 in IIAC play. The Beavers travel to Loras College on Tuesday, April 24, for a doubleheader with the Duhawks (19-9, 8-5 IIAC) with first pitch scheduled for 3:00pm.
