Buena Vista junior Porter Sartor hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning, and three Buena Vista pitchers combined on a two-hitter, as the Beavers wrapped up a series win at Luther to start Iowa Conference play with a 3-1 win over the Norse on Sunday afternoon.
Devin Wagenman singled to shortstop while Alex Savary singled to center two batters later before Sartor blasted a two-out home run to left for his first home run of the year. BVU had opportunities to extend the lead but came up short. The Beavers had the bases loaded and one out in the ninth but a force out at home and a flyout ended the threat. The Beavers left 11 runners on base in the contest.
Luther (10-3, 1-2 IIAC) plated its only run in the fifth inning. Jake Vogt doubled to lead off the inning while Derek McCready walked. Vogt then stole third and scored on a throwing error while McCready was thrown out trying to advance to third.
Tyler Heineman came on with one out in the fifth to relieve Eric LaRue, and the freshman pitched 3.2 innings shutout innings while striking out five and walking none to earn his first collegiate victory. LaRue pitched 4.1 innings and was charged with the one run on just one hit. Nick Henrichs came on to pitch the ninth, and the Norse got the winning run to the plate with no outs, but Henrichs got a big pop out and a 1-4-6-3 double play to end the game for his first second save of the year.
Peyton Renning went 3-for-5 with a double, Alex Savary was 3-for-4 with a run scored and both Bryce Rheault and Coleman Roberts finished with two hits apiece. The Beavers finished with 12 base knocks in the game.
Buena Vista improves to 6-10 overall (2-1 IIAC) and will travel to Central College next weekend for a three-game road series against the Dutch. Game one of the series is scheduled for Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
