Beaver Baseball Splits DH at Luther to begin IIAC Play

The Buena Vista baseball team plated four runs in the 10th inning of game one and held on to win the game 7-3 before Luther went on to score four times in the sixth inning of the nightcap to even the series with a 5-2 victory.

The Norse opened up a 3-0 lead in the third inning of game one with an RBI single and a two-run home run.  From there, Gage Smart battled until handing things over to Nick Henrichs late in the game. Smart went six innings, scattered six hits and struck out three.  The Beavers got him off the hook in the sixth when they rallied to tie the game at 3-3 on a Devin Wagenman two-run single followed later in the inning by a sacrifice fly from Porter Sartor.

Nick Henrichs, who started the game as the designated hitter, came on in relief to start the seventh and pitched three innings to earn his first win of the season.  He allowed just three hits, struck out four and walked two.  He buckled down to work around a one-out double in the seventh before getting out of a big jam in the eighth.  After a single by the Norse began the inning, Henrichs then threw wild on a pick-off attempt to first, allowing the runner to advance all the way to third with no outs.  That runner would be stranded there after a strikeout, ground out to third and a fly out to center.

Luther then threatend in the ninth with a leadoff doubled and a one-out walk.  Henrichs again got himself out of the trouble with a popout to shortstop and another to third.

Peyton Renning led off the 10th inning with his second double of the contest and then moved to third as Wagenman singled.  Sophomore Tyler Tennyson made it three straight hits to start the frame with his RBI single to score Renning.  Both runners then moved up a base on a balk.  After a flyout by Henichs to shallow center, Tyle Stoltze was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out.  Pinch hitter Joe Rock then sent a slow roller to second and reached on a fielder's choice to make it a 5-3 game before an infield single from Parker Truesdell pushed the margin to 6-3.  A fielding error on the Luther third baseman allowed Bryce Rheault to reach and also add another run.

The Norse tried to mount a rally in the bottom half off of Andrew Bower, but Bower would get himself out of a little jam when Henrichs, who moved to catcher after wrapping up his pitching duties, was able to run down a wild pitch and fire it back to Bower covering home to nail down the runner attempting to score.  Bower had walked the leadoff batter and threw a wild pitch before that runner moved to third on a single with one out.

After the out at home, Luther got another runner on via an error but Bower forced a fielder's choice to end the game.

Renning finished 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored while Wagenman had two hits, two RBI and also scored two runs.

A sacrifice fly gave Luther a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap, but the lead was short-lived as BVU came right back in the second with two runs to take a 2-1 lead.  Coleman Roberts drove in a pair on a sacrifice bunt attempt to second base.

That's how things stood until the sixth when Luther pushed three runs across with an RBI single and then an RBI double.  It became a 4-2 lead on a wild pitch before yet another RBI single made it 5-2.

Egan Bonde got the start on the mound and worked 5.1 innings and was charged with all five runs.  Tate Holmes came on in relief and got the final two outs.

Henrichs had two hits to lead BVU which was held to five hits.

Buena Vista is now 5-10 (1-1 IIAC) with Luther sitting at 10-2 (1-1 IIAC).  The two teams will wait and see when they will play the final game of the series.  There is snow in the forecast for Saturday which would impact the decision.
