The Buena Vista wrestling team hosted half of the Iowa Conference Duals inside of Siebens Fieldhouse on Saturday with top-ranked Wartburg going 3-0, Dubuque finishing 2-1, Central 1-2 and BVU going 0-3.VU going 0-3.
In the opener against the Spartans, Nate Vento and Kevin Pape picked up victories for BVU to help lead the way. Vento began the dual at 125 pounds with a tough 4-0 decision while Pape came from behind with a pair of late turns in the final period to win 11-6. At 157 pounds, Brad Kerkhoff nearly pulled off the upset of ninth-ranked Quincy Kalbrenner, but time expired before he was able to get him turned, and he fell by a narrow 6-4 score.
BVU then faced the ninth-ranked Dutch in the next round and took a 6-5 lead when Schuyler Spurrier recorded a first period fall. Central then took a forfeit at 141 before it picked up a narrow 7-6 decision at 149 for a 14-6 lead. Kerkhoff bounced back with a hard-fought 10-6 victory to keep the Beavers within striking distance at 14-9 midway through, but the Dutch won by pin and forfeit at the next two weights to break things open late.
Top-ranked Wartburg took on the Beavers to close out the day and handed BVU a 54-0 loss.
Buena Vista is now 1-7 overall (0-6 IIAC). The team returns to action next Friday and Saturday at the Pete Willson Invite hosted by Wheaton, Ill. Action both days gets going at 9:00 a.m.
