Pin to Win: BVU junior Shane Vaughan continues to climb the charts on the program's all-time pins list. He currently has 23 and sits 13th all-time. He's three away from the top-10 with the all-time record sitting at 48 (Tom Mashek).
Going against the Oles: The two teams have met up in each of the last two seasons with Buena Vista winning both, including a 34-15 victory up in Northfield, Minn., last season.
Scouting Each Team:
About St. Olaf: The Oles are a young team with just two upperclassmen on the roster. One of those two is senior heavyweight Troy Beaman, who finished fourth at the NCAA Regional championships a year ago and just missing out on the NCAA Championships. Earlier this year he was runner-up at the Brute Adidas-Auggie Open and also recorded a pin during a dual against #2 Augsburg right before Thanksgiving.
The team is under the direction of first-year head coach James Raczynski, who took over the duties prior to the start of the year. He served as an assistant coach in 2016-17, but has spent most of his career working in the US Navy as Director of Talent Acquisition in Minneapolis. He wrestled in the Navy and began his service in 1990.
About Buena Vista:The Beavers are in action for the second time in the last three days after a tough 38-7 home defeat to 15th-ranked Coe College on Wednesday night in what was the Iowa Conference opener for the Beavers. Junior Brad Kerkhoff got BVU on the board with a major decision at 157 pounds before Shane Vaughan picked up a decision at 165. The two have a combined 13 wins on the year and 71 combined career victories.
Sophomore Riley Altenburg leads the team with nine wins on the year with Vaughan now second at eight. Freshmen Schuyler Spurrier and John Tuttle are right behind with seven each. Vaughan, along with fellow junior Kevin Pape, are tied for the team lead with five falls.
Up Next: After today's dual, the Beavers are off until they travel to #8 Loras College on January 5.
