The Buena Vista wrestling team got its season underway on Saturday at the Super 8 Invite, hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, and the Beavers had five wrestlers place in the top eight overall.
Schuyler Spurrier finished fourt at 133 pounds as Riley Altenburg took third at 141 pounds with Teyler Bruch taking sixth. Collin Stilson placed eighth at 149 with Shane Vaughan capturing a runner-up finish at 165 pounds.
Altenburg advanced into the semifinals after a pair of pins but was then denied a spot in the finals after a tough 8-4 loss against the eventual champion. He did bounce back, however, with a 4-0 shutout in his consolation match. Vaughan found himself in the finals after a pair of pins sandwiched around a 5-0 decision. He then came up just short of a title after falling 7-3 in the championship match.
Spurrier got his career started with an 8-5 decision followed by his first career pin. After dropping a major decision he was then edged 7-3 in the third-place match.
Bruch received a bye and then was edged in the quarterfinals. After two more byes, he picked up his first career victory with an 8-3 triumph before falling in the fifth-place match to end his day.
Buena Vista will continue its schedule next Saturday by taking part in the Luther College Open in Decorah, Iowa. Action is set to begin at 9:00 a.m.
