In what was an electric atmosphere on Wednesday night, the Buena Vista wrestling team capped off the home portion of it schedule with a commanding 36-9 Iowa Conference victory over Nebraska Wesleyan.
The Beavers were hosting their 2nd Annual 'Dinner and a Show' event, but this time around, the dual was moved to the campus' Dows Ballroom (dining hall) and created a lively crowd.
A limited number of tickets were sold in advance for the opportunity to receive a three-course meal while enjoying the dual. The event also drew a large student gathering, and the Beavers gave them plenty to cheer about.
The vocal crowd got going right from the start and never looked back. Senior Ernesto Garcia picked up an 11-0 major decision to jump start the Beavers before three straight pins put the blue and gold in front, 22-0. Brad Kerkhoff sent the team into the intermission with a 26-0 advantage with a 13-0 major decision for his 16th win of the year.
Senior Andrew Nelson made the most of his final home outing and pulled away late in the third for a 9-4 decision and securing the dual win for BVU as well as his 16th triumph. Sophomore Kevin Pape followed with a major decision while Tyler Puls also pulled away late for his second straight victory.
"I was really happy with the way our guys came out and executed," said BVU head coach afterward. "Our lower weights really set the tone, and with the way they wrestled, I think it sparked some added confidence and excitement to the rest of our line-up."
The Beavers improve to 2-6 overall (1-6 IIAC) and will now wrap up the regular season this Friday night with an Iowa Conference road dual at Luther College beginning at 7:00pm.
