Buena Vista held an 18-8 lead at Simpson College on Friday night, but the Storm rallied back over the final four weights, including a pin in the final match to edge the Beavers, 23-21.
BVU built an early lead on the strength of a 7-3 decision by Ernesto Garcia at 125 pounds. The victory now makes him 11-8 on the year. Riley Altenburg followed with a forfeit at 133 pounds, giving the Beavers a 9-0 cushion.
Shane Vaughan later came up with a big pin at 149 pounds to extend the Beaver lead to 15-5. Sophomore Brad Kerkhoff fell late in his match at 157 pounds, 6-4, to make it a 15-8 contest before senior Andrew Nelson responded with a 5-2 decision over Jake Mize to push the maring back to 10.
The Storm then picked up consecutive technical falls, but were deducted one team point at 174 pounds to allow BVU to remain in front, 18-17. Senior Tyler Puls held on for a thrilling 5-4 decision at 197 pounds for his first win of the year and putting the Beavers on top, 21-17.
It came down to the heavyweight bout, and an early takedown by the Storm resulted in a first period fall for the home team, as they rallied back for the win.
Simpson improves to 6-8 on the year (2-5 IIAC) while BVU dips to 1-6 (0-6 IIAC). The Beavers look to pick up their first conference win of the year win they host Nebraska Wesleyan on Wednesday night, February 8, at 7:00pm.
That dual is also the annual Dinner and a Show dual and will take place inside of the Dows Ballroom on the campus of BVU.
