Jasmine Demers scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while Claudia Larsen added 14 points and 13 boards as the Buena Vista women's basketball team held off Central College in a defensive battle, 63-52, on Saturday night in Pella.
It was a game where both teams shot under 36 percent from the field, including 13-of-53 from downtown, but the difference probably came at the free-throw line where BVU made more shots (17) than the Dutch attempted (11).
Holly Schneider and Morgan Mulbauer each made five from the charity stripe and chipped in with 12 and eight points, respectively.
The Dutch led 11-9 with three minutes left in the first quarter before BVU closed the period by scoring the final six points and taking a 15-11 lead. Central was able to keep the game close in the second quarter by making three long range buckets, but the Beavers would still take a 29-22 lead into the half.
Demers gave BVU its first double-digit lead with one of her two treys on the day early in the third quarter, but it wasn't until late in the period that the Beavers were able to begin putting the game away. Schneider hit a three-pointer and later added a free-throw to put the team up by 14 before Larsen sank a pair at the line to make it a 48-32 advantage.
Central (7-12, 2-8 IIAC) got back as close as nine early in the fourth but BVU quickly went back up by double figures and maintained that margin the rest of the way en route to capturing the season sweep of the Dutch.
Buena Vista improves to 10-10 on the year (5-6 IIAC). The team now plays three straight home games to close out its regular season home schedule, starting with #2 Wartburg visiting Siebens Fieldhouse on Wednesday night (Jan. 31) for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off.
