Women's Hoops Rolls to Win over La Verne 97-76

Claudia Larsen and Morgan Muhlbauer each turned in double-doubles to lead four starters in double figures, as the Buena Vista women's basketball team put up a season-high in points during a 97-76 victory against La Verne on Thursday afternoon out in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

Larsen had a monster game with 24 points, 17 rebounds and eight assists.  She set career-highs in all three and also blocked two shots.  Muhlbauer scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the year.  Jasmine Demers scored 18 points, grabbed nine boards and dished out six assists while Holly Schneider chipped in with 16 points, matched a career-best with eight rebounds and also dished out four assists.

The Beavers had a strong shooting night overall at 48 percent, despite going just 5-of-20 from downtown and 10-of-18 at the free-throw line.  The four starters in double figures combined to go 33-of-64 from the field.

Buena Vista led 17-14 after one quarter and began to seize control in the second by starting on a 13-3 run and took a comfortable 43-31 lead into the break.

La Verne (2-7) tried to mount a comeback in the third quarter as it trailed by only seven with under a minute to play in the period before Cassy Miller stepped up and nailed a big three-point bucket for a 65-55 lead going to the fourth.  BVU then scored the first two buckets of the final stanza to build a 14-point lead and kept the double-digit lead the rest of the way.  La Verne was still down by only 10 with seven minutes to go, but Beth Sibenaller's bucket ignited a 6-0 run over the next three minutes to put the Beavers in front by 16, and they led by at least 15 the rest of the way.

Clarissa Perez led all scorers with 27 points to lead La Verne which was held to only 31 percent shooting from the field.

Buena Vista is now 5-5 overall and will look to close out its non-conference schedule with a win as it faces Cal Lutheran on Friday evening for a 6:00pm tip-off.
