Storm Pull Away Late and Hand Beavers 57-48 Loss in IIAC Opener

Junior Morgan Muhlbauer matched a career-high with five three-point buckets and finished with 17 points, as Claudia Larsen chipped in with nine points and 10 rebounds, but it was Simpson College pulling away late in the fourth quarter with a 17-6 spurt en route to a 57-48 victory in what was the Iowa Conference opener for both teams.

BVU led 18-12 after one quarter and was in front by four at the break, but the Beavers couldn't extend the lead by going just 3-of-14 from the charity stripe in the second half, including 1-of-6 in the fourth quarter alone where the team was held to only six total points.  BVU was just 7-of-19 overall from the line.

The Beavers remained in front at 42-40 with 7:22 left to play before a three-point bucket for Simpson gave it a lead it would not relinquish.  BVU stayed within 49-47 with under 3:00 on the clock, but the Storm then scored eight of the final nine points of the contest to pull away.

Both teams struggled from the field with BVU at 32 percent and Simpson at 35, but the Storm went 13-of-19 at the free-throw line.

Jenn Poots made her first career start for the Beavers, filling in for the injured Jasmine Demers.  She scored two points and grabbed three boards in a career-high 22 minutes.

Noreen Morrow scored a team-high 13 points for the Storm (4-2, 1-0 IIAC) as Victoria Hazard followed with 11.

Buena Vista drops to 3-4 overall (0-1 IIAC) and looks to bounce back on Saturday afternoon inside of Siebens Fieldhouse when it hosts Coe College at 2:00 p.m.
