The Buena Vista women's basketball team will have a relatively veteran and experienced group leading the way during the 2017-18 for 26th-year head coach Janet Berry.
BVU has three starters and six letterwinners back from a season ago after going 14-13 overall (9-7 IIAC) and advancing into the Iowa Conference Tournament semifinal game for the second straight season. Despite losing to graduation two of the top-four scorers from that team, the Beavers still have a veteran and experienced group coming back, and it's also added a little depth to fill out the roster.
Senior Jasmine Demers led the team in scoring a year ago (13.3ppg) and was also tops in rebounding at 6.6rpg. She went on to earn All-IIAC Second Team accolades following the season. Junior Holly Schneider (8.1ppg) was third in scoring as a sophomore while also dishing out nearly 2.0apg and recording 1.3spg. Senior Claudia Larsen will look to lead the way in the post following a junior campaign in which she scored 7.4ppg, grabbed 6.1rpg and blocked 1.7 shots per contest. Junior Morgan Muhlbauer will add a great deal of depth with her versatility. She also turned in 7.4ppg and is a threat both inside the paint and beyond the arc. She's not afraid to drive to the basket and was among the team leaders in free-throw makes per contest last season.
As a team, BVU averaged 70.5ppg and 42.1rpg in 2016-17. It'll look to keep that up-tempo, aggressive style going again this season as it goes after a high conference finish.
The team, picked to finish sixth in the IIAC this season, will play an exhibition game against NAIA nationally-ranked Morningside College on Saturday, November 11, at 2:00pm before tipping-off the regular season by hosting #16 Gustavus Adolphus on Wednesday, November 15, at 7:00pm.
