The Buena Vista women's basketball team got its holiday break off to a solid start on Saturday evening by hanging on for a thrilling 57-51 non-conference road win at Pacific Lutheran to begin play at the Pacific Northwest Tournament out in Tacoma, Wash.
Sophomore Morgan Muhlbauer helped lift the Beavers with her first career double-double, matching her career-best with 12 points while grabbing a career-high 11 rebounds. She made 4-of-8 shots from the field and 2-of-3 from the free-throw line.
Senior Sidney Beckman was the other player to reach double figures for BVU, despite struggling a bit from the field. She made just 2-of-12 shot attempts, but added four free-throws. Her two long range treys pulls her within 22 of 200 in her career and she's closing in on Susan Kies (196) for third on the progam's all-time list.
BVU won its fourth straight game, despite shooting only 28 percent from the field. It did most of its damage at the free-throw line where it attempted 19 more from the charity stripe than the Lutes, while making 10 more.
The Beavers who are the top rebounding team in the Iowa Conference, held the edge on Saturday (48-41) and scored 20 points off turnovers, compared to only 11 for PLU.
The Lutes were led by Samantha Kalleigh's game-high 15 points. She was the only player in double figures for Pacific Lutheran, which drops to 1-7 on the year.
Buena Vista is now 6-3 and will look to make it five straight wins when it faces a tough test in 18th-ranked Puget Sound (7-0) on Sunday afternoon at 4:00pm.
