The Buena Vista softball team traveled to the University of Dubuque on Tuesday afternoon for its final regular season road doubleheader of the year. The Beavers took the opener, 5-2, before the Spartans scored four runs in the fourth inning of game two en route to a 6-2 victory.
BVU wasted little time grabbing the lead in game one by plating three runs in the opening inning. Marissa Schmidt got the scoring going with a sacrifice fly followed by RBI singles from Keely Bycroft and Autumn Boland.
Schmidt drove home her second run of the contest with a double in the third while Taylor Frain scored the team's final run in the fifth on a wild pitch.
Bycroft held Dubuque in check all game until the seventh when the Spartans scored their only two runs of the contest with the help of back-to-back errors by BVU to begin the inning. Bycroft worked out of the jam and picked up her eighth win of the year. She also turned in two of the team's six hits offensively.
Frain gave the Beavers a 1-0 lead in the third inning of the nightcap with a sacrifice fly, but the lead was short-lived as Dubuque answered with a run in the bottom half. The Spartans (11-26, 2-12 IIAC) then took their first lead of the afternoon when they chalked up four runs in the fourth while adding an insurance run in the sixth.
Jeanne Bramhall homered to left field in the fifth to get BVU back within 5-2, but it wasn't quite enough. Frain tried to start a seventh inning rally by doubling to leadoff the frame but was thrown out at third trying to extend it to a triple. The team had a pair of runners on later in the inning but was unable to push any further runs across.
Schmidt and Cortney Weaver each turned in two hits apiece as BVU tallied eight total.
Buena Vista is now 19-15 overall (7-7 IIAC) and will look to close out the regular season on a positive note when it hosts Wartburg College in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon starting at 1:00pm.
