The Buena Vista softball team put its four-game overall win streak on the line Saturday afternoon when it traveled to fourth-ranked Luther College for an Iowa Conference doubleheader. The Norse, however, would come away with a pair of wins, taking the opener in five innings, 8-0, before a walk-off hit in game two gave them a 6-5 win.
Luther scored two runs in the first of game one before making it a 3-0 lead with another in the second. Neither team would score in the third, and the Norse would then score five runs in the fourth, including two home runs, to win in five innings.
BVU was held to just two hits in the contest, including a double from Taylor Frain, while Luther pounded out nine.
Keely Bycroft suffered the loss after allowiing all eight runs on nine hits and walking one in 3.2 innings.
BVU jumped on the board first in game two with an RBI double from Bycroft in the first. Luther responded and got the lead right back in the bottom half with a three-run home run.
Jeanne Bramhall's RBI infield single in the third made it 5-3, but Luther would tie things in the home half with two of its own.
The Beavers had a chance to take the lead in the seventh after Schmidt reached on an error to begin the inning. She was sacrificed two second by Bycroft but would be thrown out at home by the Luther centerfielder after Autumn Boland singled to center.
The Norse (31-3, 9-1 IIAC) then got a single to lead-off the home half before winning the game one batter later after a double to right center.
Schmidt, Bycroft and Bramhall each turned in two hits for BVU, as both teams finished with 11.
Buena Vista now sits at 18-14 overall (6-6 IIAC) and now travels to the University of Dubuque (10-23, 1-9 IIAC) on Wednesday, April 26, for a doubleheader that starts at 3:00pm.
