Buena Vista senior Garrett Rohlk set a new school record in the weight throw while taking second-place overall to help highlight the season-opening performances for the Beavers at the Dordt College Open on Saturday in Sioux Center.
Rohlk's heave of 16.58 meters surpasses Steven Ricke's mark of 52' 10" and is currently rankes 17th in Division III. Jeremiah Rice had a solid collegiate debut by taking fifth in the long jump with a leap of 6.21 meters.
"I couldn't be happier for Garrett Rohlk," said head coach Colt Slack. "Garrett has been working really hard since the end of last season, and coming home with a school record in the weight throw is well deserved. Jeremiah Rice also had a great debut in the long jump as he claimed a top-5 spot."
Buena Vista will look to build upon the early season success when it returns to action next Friday and Saturday. The team is scheduled to take part in the Prairie Wolve Invite hosted by Nebraska Wesleyan on Friday (Jan. 19) at 12:00pm while also competing at the Chelsea M. Henkenius Open at Wartburg on Saturday, starting at 10:00 a.m.
