Men's Soccer Picks up First IIAC Win of the Year

Willy Salamanca took a deflected pass off a free kick and punched it into the back of the net midway through the second half, and that proved to be the game-winner on Friday night against Coe College inside of J. Leslie Rollins Stadium.

After the Kohawks were called for a foul on the far hashmark from about 45 yards out, Ean Honeycutt took the free kick and it deflected off a Coe player just inside the box and it went right to Salamanca who blasted a shot past the keeper for the go-ahead goal.  Coe didn't get many clean looks at the goal the rest of the way, and the Beavers were on their way to their first league victory since knocking off Coe by the same score a year ago.

Jared Dow broke a scoreless match midway through the first half when he took a nice entry pass from Gum Riak and crossed a shot to the back left corner of the net for his second goal of the year.

Coe tied things early in the 34' on a rebounded shot directly following a penalty kick that Manuel Garcia Aguilar saved but knocked out in front of the box and couldn't get recover to handle.

BVU held a 14-7 advantage in total shots, including a 7-3 margin on-goal.  Salamanca finished with a team-high four shots (three on-goal) with Dow and Honeycutt each turning in three.

Martin Lacher recorded three of the team's seven shots while Keegan McIntosh was right behind at two.

Aguilar posted two saves for BVU while going the distance.

Buena Vista is now 4-10-1 overall (1-4 IIAC) and will be off until Wednesday afternoon when it travels to Central College for an Iowa Conference match starting at 12:00 p.m.
