The Buena Vista men's soccer team came out and played about as well as it could have defensively on Saturday as it began Iowa Conference play by hosting Luther, but it was the Norse who took advantage of a free-kick opportunity early in the second half to edge BVU, 1-0.
Luther (5-3-1, 2-0 IIAC) held the Beavers without a shot in the match, but it was the defense from the blue and gold that still made things tough on the Norse. Luther did take 20 shots overall, but only 10 were on-goal.
The lone goal of the match came in the 50' after BVU was called for a foul just outside of the box. Luther lined up for a free-kick and the initial kick was saved by Manuel Garcia Aguilar but he couldn't quite control the kick and knocked it back out in play which was then returned back into the net before Aguilar could get back to his feet after making the diving save.
Aguilar finished with nine saves in the match as BVU dropped its fourth one-goal match of the year and seventh by two or less.
Buena Vista is now 3-7-1 (0-1 IIAC) will now travel to Loras College on Wednesday night for a 7:30pm match inside of the Rock Bowl against the Duhawks.
