The Buena Vista men's soccer team took a 1-0 lead into the half before adding a pair of late insurance goals en route to a strong 3-0 road victory over Bethany Lutheran to begin the 2015 season.
The Beavers controlled the game offensively throughout, holding an 18-6 advantage in total shots. Fabian Salazar put BVU in front during the 38' minute on a header from the top of the box off of feeds from Tyler Smaha and Marcus Krause.
The game stood that way until the 80' when Ricky Rugabisha turned in his first collegiate goal on another assist from Krause at the top corner of the box. Carlos Silva made it a three-goal lead when he converted a shot from the right corner off a pass from Rugabisha during the 87'.
Gum Riak led Buena Vista with five shots, followed by three each from Rugabisha and Smaha. Riak had three of the team's 12 shots-on-goal while Krause had two.
Jake Hutto went the distance in-goal for the Beavers, posting four saves and earning a win and shutout in his first collegiate outing.
