Freshman Anthony Gallagher carded his lowest collegiate round with an 81 Friday during the opening round of the DIII Midwest Regional Classic being played in Galena, Ill., at Eagle Ridge Resort.
After a rough start of +5 over his first first two holes, Gallagher settled in nicely going +4 over his final 16. He heads into Saturday's final round in a tie for 63rd overall but only three strokes back of being in the top-25. His previous low was his opening round 82 last week at the Blue Top Ridge Shootout in Riverside, Iowa.
"He was really in an all-out grind mode for most of the day," said head coach Brett Benson. "It was really impressive for a freshman."
Freshman Ryan Ruzek turned in an opening-round 87 with senior Logan Madren right behind with an 88. Freshman Andrew Underbrink was one of thre on the day with a 92 with Evan Krause rounding out the line-up with a 94.
A total of 180 golfers were entered into the event from 32 teams. No team scores were available for Friday's round.
